Vardaman Sweet Potato Banquet Is Saturday Night

By JOEL McNEECE
Tickets are on sale now for the 36th Annual Sweet Potato Festival Banquet scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Vardaman gymnasium.
mitchell_johnsonEntertainment for this year’s festival is Elvis Tribute Artist Mitchell Johnson of Vardaman.
Johnson's career as an Elvis Tribute Artist started on a Carnival Cruise boat approximately four years ago when he entered and won a "Legends" concert portraying Elvis.
Johnson started listening to Elvis' music as a small child in the form of records and later on in 8-tracks. Since becoming an Elvis Tribute Artist, he has had met some of the people Elvis performed and recorded with. He keeps a busy schedule performing throughout the region, already having performed numerous shows in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia and Florida.
Awards scheduled to be presented at this year’s banquet include Pioneer, Tater Boy, Mama Grace, Best Washed and Graded Bushel of Sweet Potatoes, Mayor’s Cup and the various recipe winners.
Entries for the recipe contest must be brought to the Vardaman High School cafeteria at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
The banquet will also include the annual auction of this year's Sweet Potato Quilt.
Banquet tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at BancorpSouth in Vardaman or Sweet Potato Sweets.
Sweet Potato Queen and King contests are ongoing this week also. This year’s queen will be crowned Thursday night during the 7th-12th grade pageant beginning at 7 p.m.

Favoriting contest: Dallas Children’s Theater holiday shows

Favoriting contest: Dallas Children’s Theater holiday shows

Square Pegs

This is a particularly cool contest, in that our friends (and advertisers) at Dallas Children's Theater were thoughtful enough to make each prize pack family sized, with tickets for four, accommodating a whole family. And, unlike many of our contests, you can pick the show you want to attend.

We've got two prize packs of four tickets each for two shows:

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a well-known classic getting its first performance at the Rosewood Center: "It just isn’t Christmas without the Herdmans! They’re the worst kids in the history of the world, and they’re determined to be in the annual Christmas pageant. The congregation is horrified, but sometimes compassion and generosity come from the most unexpected places."

Santa’s Holiday for Strings is a performance from Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts, featuring Santa, Frosty, dancing penguins, a singing armadillo, and more.

To enter, go to the show page for either (or both) shows here on PegNews (links above) and click "Add to Favorites" (requires free / easy / painless registration and login.) We'll draw winners on Monday, November 16 so you can have your pick of shows.
